A
seocnd regional conference on Justice is being planned tentatively
for June 6-7, 2007 in Cochrane, Ontario. The objectives of
this conference is to identify and discuss mechanisms and
processes to address the various issues and concerns with
the existing justice delivery services that were identified
during the first conference. The second objective is to discuss
ways to advance the maximum utilization of alternative/restorative
justice mechanisms as an interim process while the traditional
processes are being re-visited. And, finally, to begin discussion
on the concept of creating and developing processes, mechanisms
and potential partnerships to work towards achieving the vision
of a Mushkegowuk Justice Services delivery structure, for
the people, by the people.
Proposals
were developed and submitted to both Legal Aid Ontario and
to NAN Legal Services to help off-set the costs associated
with hosting such a conference. We have not been able to secure
the financial resources required as of yet.
In
anticipation of funding, planning has proceeded with the letters
of invitations sent out and other coordinating activities
being worked on. The draft agenda is currently being worked
on with the assistance of our legal counsel.
This
completes the highlights of the major initiatives.
