Community Legal Workers

RESOLUTION NO. 1989-88

SUBJECT: COMMUNITY LEGAL WORKERS

WHEREAS several of the members of the Mushkegowuk Council have requested that community legal workers be stationed in their communities;

AND WHEREAS this request has been submitted to the Ontario Legal Aid Plan by Keewaytinok Native Legal Services and has been rejected by the Plan;

AND WHEREAS the community legal workers could provide services of benefit to the Mushkegowuk people by implementing a program of legal education to help the people understand the judicial system and by assisting the people in enforcing their legal rights;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Mushkegowuk Council pursue the goal of having a community legal worker in each of its communities and that it attempt to obtain funding for these workers from the Ontario Legal Aid Plan, the Law society of Upper Canada, the Department of Justice and any other agencies that may be able to provide assistance.
