RESOLUTION NO. 1990-148

SUBJECT: COMMUNITY FUTURES TRAINING PROGRAM

WHEREAS Employment and Immigration Canada offers a training program called "Community Futures" which is aimed at regions with chronic unemployment and good potential for economic development;

AND WHEREAS the Mushkegowuk communities have extremely high unemployment rates and excellent opportunities for economic development;

AND WHEREAS Community Futures is a training program which can be extremely effective when working in conjunction with other community and outside initiatives;

AND WHEREAS the Mushkegowuk communities have been developing the capacity for community economic development through the hiring of Band Economic Development Officers and the establishment of local Development Corporations;

AND WHEREAS the Mushkegowuk Council has been developing the capacity for economic development through the hiring of an Economic Development Advisor, the provision of training to the Band Economic Development Officers and the setting up of the Mushkegowuk Development Corporation;

AND WHEREAS the Mushkegowuk Council, in conjunction with McMaster University (TASO), is currently involved with a three year study on "Culturally Appropriate Economic Development in the Mushkegowuk Region"

Community Futures Training Program

AND WHEREAS the establishment of a Community Futures Committee would lead to increased training opportunities for unemployed community members and the establishment of support for local business development;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT this Assembly supports the establishment of the Mushkegowuk Community Futures Committee by Barbara McDougall, the Minister of Employment and Immigration Canada, by
