FIFTH ANNUAL ASSEMBLY RESOLUTION

SUBJECT: MUSHKEGOWUK CULTURAL ORIENTATION

WHEREAS Mushkegowuk First Nations are committed to improving the physical, emotional and spiritual health of our people;

Chief Reg Louttit Attawapiskat First Nation

Adopted by consensus

Certified copy of a Resolution adopted on:

November 15, 1990

AND WHEREAS many of our people have been hospitalized due to illness and or accident, including our children and our elders;

AND WHEREAS our people are sent to facilities in Cochrane, Timmins, Moose Factory and south;

AND WHEREAS there is a great lack of under­standing shown to people and our culture on the part of many non-native medical staff;

AND WHEREAS this lack of understanding has long term negative effects on the physical, emotional and spiritual health of our people;

BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Mushkegowuk Council shall undertake to develop with the Governments of Canada and Ontario, a cultural orientation program that is culturally-relevant;

MUSHKEGOWUK COUNCIL

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the completed program will be used not only in Moose Factory Hospital and Kashechewan and Peawanuck nursing stations, but in James Bay General Hospital and Attawapiskat and Fort Albany wings, Cochrane, Timmins and south;

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT proper cultural orientation be mandatory, not voluntary.
