MUSHKEGOWUK COUNCIL

SUBJECT: EXTENSION OF POLAR BEAR PARK

WHEREAS it is the intention of the Weenusk First Nation to maintain in perpetuity the wilderness state of the Hudson Bay Lowlands while at the same time guaranteeing that First Nations people continue to earn a living from the land by having the right to pursue economic opportunities that do not conflict with the perpetual wilderness concept;

AND WHEREAS outside interests are pursuing mineral development in lands adjacent to Polar Bear Park;

AND WHEREAS any such development without the approval of the Weenusk First Nation is contrary to the legal and inherent rights of the Weenusk First Nation;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT Mushkegowuk Council support the Weenusk First Nation in seeking to have the Polar Bear Park extended to include the lands bounded by the 54th parallel and 87th longitude, with necessary conditions to allow First Nations to pursue appropriate economic opportunities.
