RESOLUTION NO. 2002-09-27

OMUSHKEGO INSTITUTE

WHEREAS the Mushkegowuk Chiefs and delegates in Assembly on September 2, 1999 passed Resolution No. 1999-09-10 endorsing and supporting the establishment of a regional Cree Language Committee mandated to work for the development of a Cree Language Institute serving the people of the Mushkegowuk communities, and;

WHEREAS a feasibility study was undertaken to determine the interests, needs and capacity of Mushkegowuk communities to support a Cree Language Institute, and;

WHEREAS Omushkego Education has established a Steering Committee for the development of an Educational Institute including programs and services, and;

WHEREAS Omushkego Education in partnership with an establjshed University has developed a Cree Language Teacher Certification Course, having completed Part 1 this summer of a three part course, and;

WHEREAS Omushkego Education has a Memorandum of Understanding with three other First Nation Aboriginal Language Patiners in Ontario who have acquired a Support Resolution in principle from the Chiefs of Ontario to access funds from the "Future Generations Fund", for the purpose of establishing a Cree Language Centre, and;

WHEREAS Omushkego Education wishes to partner with Oshki-Pimache-O-Win in the development and provision of educational programs in support of post secondary education, and;

WHEREAS Omushkego Education wishes to partner with the Aboriginal Institutes' Consortium of Ontario which is committed to Aboriginal economic success by recognizing cultmal values, traditions and needs through post secondary education and training.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Chiefs and delegates in Assembly endorse the establishment of a regional educational institute under the name Omushkego Institute mandated to promote and support the retention, preservation and maintenance of Cree Language, Culture, traditional knowledge, skills, values and beliefs of the Mushkegowuk First Nations,

AND FURTHER BE IT RESOLVED that Omushkego Education be delegated with the responsibility to undertake the necessary steps to establish the governance and funding structure of Omushkego Institute.
