Resource Revenue Sharing in Mushkegowuk Territories
WHEREAS the Mushkegowuk People have always lived in our Mushkegowuk Territories, and always will; and
WHEREAS our Mushkegowuk Territories are rich in resources and we have always shared our resources with the people of Canada and Ontario; and
WHEREAS in 1869 when Canada wished to unite with Rupert's Land, Canada committed to protect the rights of the Indian Nations and to share the resources fairly; and
WHEREAS the governments of Canada and Ontario have taken advantage of our generosity and trust, and have mistakenly insisted that all the resources of our lands and environment are theirs; and
WHEREAS the Mushkegowuk People remain ready to share our resources fairly;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Mushkegowuk Council in Assembly reaffirms the ancestral rights of the Mushkegowuk People to the lands and environment we have always occupied; c!nd
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Mushkegowuk Council in Assembly reaffirms the rights of the Mushkegowuk People to the revenues from the resources in our ancestral lands and environment; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Mushkegowuk Council in Assembly reaffirms the willingness of the Mushkegowuk People to continue sharing the revenues from our ancestral lands and environment with the people of Ontario and Canada, if the sharing occurs on terms different than the past; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Mushkegowuk Council in Assembly reaffirms the willingness of the Mushkegowuk People to continue sharing the revenues from our ancestral lands and environment with the people of Ontario and Canada, if the sharing is based on respect for our history with the land and environment, our right to amenities equal to other Canadians and our right to continue and grow as a people, a culture and a nation.
