Research for Treaty Commemoration

WHEREAS Kashechewan First Nation has begun to prepare for the 2005 commemoration of the signing of Treaty 9 near its community in 1905, by investigating possibilities for collecting and organizing important local, Mushkegowuk, and other oral, written, video, music and other materials, which it calls the Naskoomitowin Project ("The Promises"); and

WHEREAS Kashechewan has requested and received a research proposal from a highly qualified and locally experienced researcher, totaling approximately $40,000 plus travel, accommodations, printing and related costs, which Kashechewan believes would provide excellent background to the Treaty commemoration and be valuable to all the Mushkegowuk people;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Mushkegowuk Council supports the Kashechewan "Naskoomitowin Project" and its proposed research, and supports Kashechewan's request for funding for the project.
