Resolution No. 2007-06-11

Support for the Environmental Research Centre

WHEREAS the Mushkegowuk Council of Chiefs supported the creation of an environmental research centre and as a result the Mushkegowuk Environmental Research Centre (MERC) was formed in 2005 to undertake and coordinate environmental research, including the application of traditional knowledge;

WHEREAS the MERC has been very successful in carrying out its mandate and needs to establish a more permanent structure to maintain accountability to the Mushkegowuk First Nations;

WHEREAS the staff of the Centre have undertaken a review of operations, including possibly restructuring options;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by this Assembly that the Centre remain as a not­for-profit institution with a board member appointed by each of the Mushkegowuk First Nations as well as a board member representing Mushkegowuk Council;

FURTHER BE IT RESOLVED that the Centre be renamed as "Kiituskinno" (Our Land) to better reflect the importance of traditional knowledge and language;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that when the Centre undertakes contracts with private industry the board and staff are to make adequate provisions to ensure that

the rights of individual First Nations are not negatively impacted.
