Resolution No. 2007-09-21

Illegal Sale of Narcotics (Drugs) and Alcohol

WHEREAS Resolution No. 2006-09-37 notes that the Elders urged all Mushkegowuk community members to strongly support their Chiefs and Councils and police service providers in fighting against drug and alcohol abuse; and

WHEREAS the Elders urged that our communities move toward choosing a more positive and healthy lifestyle for the benefit of our future generations; and

WHEREAS there is an increase in the illegal sale of drugs and alcohol in our communities which is impacting the social well being and health of individuals, and resulting in the rise of family violence, poverty, including accidental deaths and suicide; and

WHEREAS Nishnawbe Aski Police Services has on occasion consulted with other policing agencies in dealing with the illegal sale of drugs and alcohol;

WHEREAS there is a need for Nishnawbe Aski Police Services to undertake a regional strategy in consultation with other policing agencies including relevant social and health service organizations to explore preventative measures regarding the illegal sale of drugs and alcohol; and

WHEREAS this regional strategy needs to identify and include an aggressive component of law enforcement of Nishnawbe Aski Police Services towards decreasing the illegal sale of drugs and alcohol;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Chiefs and Delegates in Assembly mandate the Grand Chief to meet with Nishnawbe Aski Police Services to explore and discuss a regional strategy towards addressing the illegal sale of drugs and alcohol within the Mushkegowuk communities through prevention and law enforcement; and

FURTHER BE IT RESOLVED that Nishnawbe Aski Police Services commit to an aggressive approach in the implementation of this regional strategy to address the illegal sale of controlled substances of drugs and alcohol in our First Nation communities through prevention and law enforcement.
