Resolution No. 2008-11-19

Education Funding

WHEREAS First Nation Education is both an Inherent Aboriginal and Treaty Right and the Mushkegowuk Nation views First Nation Education as an investment in the future of our Nation; and

WHEREAS the education funds received from Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) per student for on-reserve schools is inadequate and does not meet the provincial Ministry of Education's standards for education; and

WHEREAS on-reserve schools are not able to compete with the Provincial schools to draw more teachers due to the difference in salaries; and

WHEREAS our children suffer from lack of resources and fewer courses to choose from due to the limited funds received from INAC; and

WHEREAS the costs of providing education are higher in northern Ontario.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Chiefs and delegates in Assembly mandate the Grand Chief and Executive to continue to lobby on behalf of the Mushkegowuk Territory First Nation communities to bring the per student allocation from INAC up to a level equivalent to levels received by other students in provincial schools (including an adjustment for additional northern costs.)
