Building an Omushkegowuk Regional Economy

WHEREAS the Omushkegowuk homelands are rich in resources and the natural environment; and

WHEREAS the Mushkegowuk First Nations continue to experience significant levels of poverty including a shortage of adequate housing and infrastructure; and

WHEREAS reliance on government funding alone will only continue the crisis mode that our communities face;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that this Mamowihitowin of the Omushkegowuk directs the Office of the Grand Chief to explore possible opportunities to build an Omushkegowuk Regional Economy in order to create wealth and prosperity for the Omushkegowuk;

BE IT FUTHER RESOLVED that the building of a regional economy should be based on the will of the Omushkegowuk and their leaders and should look at how to utilize the resources of our homelands while balancing the need to protect our natural environment;

FINALLY BE IT RESOLVED that the Office of the Grand Chief should proceed with preliminary engagement with the People, various governments and industry, including discussions at the Treaty Table to explore the possibility of developing specific enabling legislation for the Omushkegowuk Region if that is a desirable option.
