Federal Cutbacks to Tribal Council Funding

WHEREAS on September 4, 2012 the federal Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development announced dramatic and extremely far-reaching cutbacks to funding of Aboriginal Tribal Councils across Canada, including the Mushkegowuk Tribal Council; and

WHEREAS ML.ishkegowuk Council as a tribal council performs an essential role in the provIsIon of services and governance support to the Mushkegowuk First Nations, and as a regional government of the Omushkego; and

WHEREAS this devastating decision by the federal government, which will have enormous harmful effects on the people of the Mushkegowuk First Nations, was made in secret and without consultation with Mushkegowuk Council or the Omushkego; and

WHEREAS these dramatic and sudden and very serious cutbacks appear to have no justification in terms of the needs of, and the provision of services to, First Nations, and have the appearance of a federal government attempt to silence an effective voice for

expressing the legitimate concerns and aspirations of First Nations and of the Omushkego; and

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Chiefs and delegates of the Mushkegowuk Mamowihitowin express their shock and grave concern about the sudden, unjustified, extremely damaging and dramatic cutbacks in tribal council funding announced by the federal government, and undertaken without any consultation; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Mamowihitowin of the Mushkegowuk directs the Mushkegowuk Grand Chief, with the assistance of the Mushkegowuk Chiefs and staff, to defend the rights and aspirations of the Mushkegowuk people against these dramatic and devastating and unjustified cutbacks, through public and personal communications, working with other First Nation organizations, and other means.
