Location of the Future Regional Hospital

WHEREAS First Nation leadership of the Mushkegowuk Council have passed several resolutions over the years regarding the location of the future regional hospital, including in 1990, 1999, 2001 and 2008, all of which supported building the hospital on Moose Factory Island;

WHEREAS the Weeneebayko Area Health Authority has no mandate or authority to override or ignore duly passed Chiefs resolutions with regards to the location of the new regional hospital or any other health related resolutions and decisions;

WHEREAS as the official record stands First Nation leadership . in the Mushkegowuk area support the construction of the new regional hospital on Moose Factory Island;

WHEREAS an important consideration with regards to the location of the future regional hospital is that it be located on First Nation and/or federal lands in order to maintain a strong connection with our collective treaty right to health;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that First Nation leadership within the Omushkego area affirm our authority to participate directly in health planning and health service delivery for our people and that this right cannot be undermined or taken over by any corporate body;

FURTHER BE IT RESOLVED that federal and provincial governments must honour their obligation to consult directly with First Nations on any action that may infringe upon Aboriginal and Treaty rights;

FINALLY BE IT RESOLVED that First Nation leadership with the Omushkego area recognize the importance of maintaining health facilities and health services on First Nation and/or federal lands.
