Beaver Protection and Management Strategy

WHEREAS, our Creator provided us the Omushkegowuk with a natural environment on Mother Earth to sustain our way of life for as long as the sun shines, the grass grows, and rivers flow; and

WHEREAS, our Creator's gifts included sacred teachings that uphold the highest respect for all living creatures, including all the animals; and

WHEREAS, the Creator's natural environment and animals continue to play a large part in preserving our culture and traditional way of life; and

WHEREAS, human behaviour in many forms continue to negatively impact the natural environment, including the survival of animals, fish, birds and all other creatures;

WHEREAS, it is a known fact that the beaver population is out of control in our region and causing environmental damage to the natural environment;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that this Mamowihitowin of the Omushkegowuk directs the Office of the Grand Chief to develop and implement a Beaver Protection Strategy that is

based on out culture, teachings and practices, to maintain a sustainable beaver population, including a review of possible funding programmes to assist hunters, trappers, youth and elders who wish to spend traditional time on the land.
