Support of Wakenagun Restructuring
WHEREAS, in 1995 Wakenagun Community Futures Development Corporation was created to promote economic development in Mushkegowuk and other northern First Nation communities through business financing, business advisory services, and strategic planning; and
WHEREAS, since that time, Wakenagun has assisted many business and economic development projects in Mushkegowuk Territory, including through the investment of $5.9 million in small businesses in Mushkegowuk and neighbouring territory, and
WHEREAS, Wakenagun could continue to play a useful and valuable role in economic development In Mushkegowuk Territory in the future, and
WHEREAS, Wakenagun has experienced organizational difficulties due to issues related to Board structure, organizational capacity, and other administrative issues; and
WHEREAS, the funding agency of Wakenagun has worked with
Wakenagun and strategic consultants to prepare a plan to revitalize Wakenagun through Board restructuring (including a move to a "skills-based" Board) and other measures; and
WHEREAS the Wakenagun funding agency requires the approval of the Mushkegowuk First Nations and other stakeholders for the Wakenagun restructuring plan before the plan can move forward;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Mushkegowuk Chiefs in Assembly strongly support the continuation of the important work of Wakenagun Community Futures Corporation, and support the proposed restructuring plan to allow Wakenagun to continue and improve its community economic and business development services to the people and communities of Mushkegowuk Territory.
