Conducting Searches for Illegal Drugs and Alcohol on the Winter Roads

WHEREAS the opioid crisis and illegal drugs and alcohol epidemic continues to destroy our families, communities and our Cree way of life; and

WHEREAS the winter roads in Mushkegowuk region are a major contributor to our state of emergency as they provide another non­regulated mode for transporting illegal drugs and alcohol into our communities; and

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that this Mamowihitowin of the Omushkegowuk fully supports the Mushkegowuk First Nations to secure the required resources to establish their own community-based Peacekeepers or related public safety and security services; and

THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Mamowihitowin of the Omushkegowuk fully support the Mushkegowuk First Nations that are responsible for managing the winter roads within their traditional lands to work together to establish a system for conducting search and confiscation of illegal drugs and alcohol; and

THEREFORE, BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that this Mamowihitowin of the Omushkegowuk mandates the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service and Ontario Provincial Police to provide full support to the work of the Community Peacekeepers program.
