Engaging Canada and Ontario in Discussions on the Recognition and Implementation of Indigenous Justice Systems in Mushkegowuk Communities

WHEREAS, the Mushkegowuk communities have an inherent right to self-governance; and

WHEREAS, the Mushkegowuk communities have maintained a nation­to-nation relationship with Ontario and Canada; and

WHEREAS, the Mushkegowuk communities have their own legal traditions and governance frameworks; and

WHEREAS, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Call-to-Action No. 42 calls upon the federal, provincial and territorial governments to commit to the recognition and implementation of Aboriginal justice systems;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Deputy Grand Chief Friday of Mushkegowuk Council will engage with the governments of Canada and Ontario in drafting a Memorandum of Understanding to guide future discussions about Mushkegowuk Council's assertion over Cree laws and jurisdiction; and to increasing Mushkegowuk communities' control over the administration of justice within their communities.
