Indigenous Teacher Education Program, Queen's University and Mushkegowuk Council, Omushkego Education

WHEREAS our community education systems are experiencing challenges with recruitment and retention of local educators, and there is an urgent need to provide community-based teaching programs; and

WHEREAS in June 2019, OE was directed by the community education authorities to work with Queen's University on developing and delivering the community based Indigenous Teacher Education Program (ITEP) program within our region; and

WHEREAS the ITEP program was scheduled to start May 2020 but due to COVID 19 impacts, the ITEP program was delayed, and the new implementation date was rescheduled to May 2021;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that there are many positive outcomes that will come from this partnership (and ITEP), including but not limited to, local recruitment and retention, more local graduates with Bachelor of

Education degrees from Queen's University, more local educators/teachers, improved education system for our children, more children graduating, more role models within our communities;

THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED

that the Mushkegowuk Council of Chiefs and delegates in assembly fully support and approve the partnership between Queen's University, and Mushkegowuk Council, Omushkego Education to proceed with the delivery of the ITEP within the Mushkegowuk First Nation communities.
