Resolution No. 2021-11-19

Zoom Court Stations for the James Bay Coastal Communities: Moose Cree First Nation, Fort Albany First Nation, Kashechewan First Nation and Attawapiskat First Nation

WHEREAS the COVID 19 pandemic has impacted the ability of the fly-in court system to attend in-person court sittings in the above mentioned communities; and

WHEREAS many accused people in our communities have not been able to attend court appearance due to the lack of land phone lines in their homes and limited access to reliable internet in our communities; and

WHEREAS the solicitor-client relationship has been negatively impacted because there are no in-person court appearances, lawyers have not been able to meet with their clients to review evidence and obtain instructions in the communities;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED the abovementioned First Nations make every effort to designate a zoom court location or station in each of their communities to assist their members to have reliable internet and access to the zoom court platform in an appropriate location to attend court.

FURTHERMORE BE IT RESOLVED, this would lessen and avoid added bench warrants and remands being granted.
