WHEREAS the Mushkegowuk Communities have the right to administer a local justice system in accordance with its traditional principles;

WHEREAS the Attawapiskat justice system has operated for several years, but suffers from a lack of sufficient financial support from the provincial and federal governments;

WHEREAS the provincial government has indicated that it may consider cutting back its financial support for the Attawapiskat local justice system;

WHEREAS the provincial and federal governments continue to spend money on imposing alien justice systems on Mushkegowuk Council communities;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the communities of Mushkegowuk Council strongly support the Attawapiskat First Nation in its operation of its local justice system;

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that any move by the provincial government to cut funding for the alternative justice system, and the failure of the federal government to provide funding, are serious obstacles to establishing just and necessary selfgovernment in Mushkegowuk Council.

RESOLUTION NO. 1995-10-04 PAGE 2
