RESOLUTION NO. 1997-08-17

SUBJECT: MUSHKEGOWUK COMMUNITIES TRADITIONAL TERRITORY LAND CLAIM

WHEREAS since time immemorial the members of the Mushkegowuk First Nations have been caring for and utilizing the land and waterways in their traditional territories; and

WHEREAS the land contained within the Mushkegowuk communities' traditional territory is coming under increasing pressure from mining, forestry, and other related industries; and

WHEREAS resource development activities are taking place in the Mushkegowuk Traditional Territory without the informed consent, direction, control, or benefit of the respective Mushkegowuk First Nations; and

WHEREAS the Ministry of Natural Resources continues to harass Mushkegowuk First Nation members who pursue traditional activities in their traditional territory,

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Mushkegowuk Chiefs in Assembly urge the Provincial and Federal Governments immediately to recognize the authority of the respective Mushkegowuk First Nations in regards to all activities on their traditional territories and refrain from harassing any Mushkegowuk First Nation member in their traditional pursuits anywhere on their traditional territory.
