RESOLUTION NO. 1999-09-10
CREE LANGUAGE INSTITUTE DEVELOPMENT
WHEREAS the Mushkegowuk Council Chiefs in Assembly have long recognized the importance of the Omushkegowuk Cree Language and culture; and
WHEREAS the retention of Cree Language will be an essential component of self-government and self-determination for Mushkegowuk First Nations; and
WHEREAS many past Assemblies have supported the development of Cree Language programs aimed at promoting, developing and retaining the use of Cree language throughout Mushkegowuk communities; and
WHEREAS the desire has been expressed by membership of the Mushkegowuk Counci1 for an increase in the use of Cree language by organizations operating within Mushkegowuk territory; and
WHEREAS cw-rent practices in the teaching of Cree Language within the schools are failing to ensure the retention of Cree Language among young people; and
WHEREAS Cree Language courses are needed in addition to Ojibway Language courses cunently offered in some of the schools serving Mushkegowuk First Nation members; and
WHEREAS a more specialized and regionally supported effort is required to consolidate and strengthen all of the programs concerned with the retention of Cree Language; and
WHEREAS initial funding has been received to establish a committee to work toward development of a regional Cree Language Institute within Mush.kegowuk ten-itory; and
WHEREAS the Cree Language Institute will eventually undertake research, support community language initiatives, provide training and develop fully accredited Cree Language courses at all levels;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Mushkegowuk Chiefs in Assembly endorse and support the initial establishment of a regional Cree Language Committee mandated to work toward the development of a Cree Language Institute serving the people of the Mush.kegowuk Cree Nation.
