Resolution No. 2006-09-09

Cree Alliance

WHEREAS historically a harmonious and strong traditional land use and kinship relationship existed amongst the Cree inhabiting the west and east coasts including the inland region of James and Hudson Bay; and

WHEREAS with the establishment, growth and continuing development of our communities we acknowledged the need for self governing structures as evidence through the Mushkegowuk Nation Building Initiative and First Nation Governance strategies and the Grand Council of the Crees in Quebec; and

WHEREAS there is increased growth in the number of regional resource and economic ventures impacting our various individual and collective First Nations without respect of traditional lands or in acknowledgement of Aboriginal and Treaty Rights, including other common regional issues such as harvesting, traditional territories; and

WHEREAS it is in the best interests for our collective First Nations to unite by open and constructive dialogue for the purpose of creating a common front and to strengthen our positions in dealing with external land and resource developers including the provincial and federal government.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Assembly mandates the Grand Chief to undertake the appropriate discussions to address these common regional issues through the development, approval and implementation of an Inter-Tribal Treaty between the Mushkegowuk First Nations and the Grand Council of the Crees of Quebec.
