Resolution No. 2006-09-23

Mushkegowuk Communities

WHEREAS in the summer of 2006 and in previous summers the Mushkegowuk First Nations and Mushkegowuk Council were able to offer to young people in our communities summer jobs in groups and various projects, such as Canadian Junior Rangers, Environmental Youth Corps, S.E.E.D., HRDC programmes, and others; and

WHEREAS these group employment opportunities offer a critical life and work experience opportunity for First Nation youth whose options for summer employment in their communities are otherwise very limited, and much less than in southern communities; and

WHEREAS many of these employment and education projects have had their funding cut or eliminated in Mushkegowuk territory, although similar projects have continued in southern Ontario.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Mushkegowuk Assembly strongly urges funding agencies for Canadian Junior Rangers, Environmental Youth Corps, S.E.E.D., HRDC programmes, and others to reconsider and reinstate the funding for these youth employment programmes, which represent a special need and special opportunity in Mushkegowuk territory.
