Resolution No. 2007-09-07

First Nation Education

WHEREAS First Nation Education is both an Inherent Aboriginal and Treaty Right and the Mushkegowuk Nation views First Nation Education as an investment in the future of our youth and ultimately the future of our Nation; and,

WHEREAS the 2004 Auditor General Report has stated that First Nation Education is twenty-six (26) years behind the average Canadian student; and,

WHEREAS the federal government refuses to acknowledge the reports and studies outlining the need for increased funding for Education Authority Renewals from the Treasury Board for the period ending April 2008 to March 2013; and,

WHEREAS the federal government has responded that there will be no change in current levels in the areas of Post Secondary, Band Operated Funding Formula, Systems and Jurisdiction, and Special Education; and,

WHEREAS Resolution No. 2005-03-07 states that the Mushkegowuk Nation is in a nation-to-nation relationship with the provincial and federal governments of Canada, and it is appropriate and necessary for the Mushkegowuk Nation to deal with the governments of Ontario and Canada at the most senior level;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Chiefs and Delegates in Assembly mandate the Grand Chief and the Executive to develop a government to government strategy that would use teams of senior and expert Mushkegowuk representatives to approach the most senior levels of Ontario and Canadian governments, for funding that is more reflective of the education needs and Treaty Rights of the Mushkegowuk people.
