Support for Long-Term Care of Elders
WHEREAS our First Nations have the fundamental right and responsibility to of caring for the health and wellbeing of our elders; and
WHEREAS our ancestors entered into Treaty No. 9 with the understanding that the happiness and prosperity of our people was a shared priority of the Crown and First Nations; and
WHEREAS this right and responsibility cannot be taken from us by any other government, team, or corporate body; and
WHEREAS there is an immediate need to advocate and lobby for increased opportunities to access specialized elders care within the Mushkegowuk communities, and to pursue partnerships toward that goal; and
WHEREAS Mushkegowuk Council supports the request and recommendation of the communities and leadership support our long-term care elders remaining in their Mushkegowuk First Nation communites where support services, cultural activities, and community events can be more accessible to our elders and for their wellbeing;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Chiefs and Delegates of this 36th Mamowihitowin of the Omushkegowuk reaffirms and clearly declares that the health and well-being needs of our elders are a fundamental concern of the Mushkegowuk First Nations; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Chiefs and delegates of this 36th Mamowihitowin of the Omushkegowuk strongly supports the improvement of longterm care programs for elders in our Mushkegowuk territory to enable Elders to remain in their homes and communities with the appropriate support and care; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Assembly directs Mushkegowuk Council to work with the Mushkegowuk First Nations to support and advocate for initiatives to improve Elder care in Mushkegowuk Territories, including working with Weeneebayko Area Health Authority (WAHA), and the federal and provincial governments.
