Resolution No. 2022-09-12

Omushkego Institute

WHEREAS the 36th Mamowihitowin of the Omushkegowuk re-asserts the importance of education for its members; and

WHEREAS the 36th Mamowihitowin of the Omushkegowuk re-asserts the importance of our language, culture, and traditions being embedded in the educational institutions within Mushkegowuk territory; and

WHEREAS the 36th Mamowihitowin of the Omushkegowuk re-asserts the importance of having its own post-secondary institution in the Mushkegowuk territory as per Resolution 2002-09-27 and 2010-09-09, being referred to as The Omushkegowuk Institute; and

WHEREAS the Omushkego Institute would ensure inclusion of language and culture in education in Mushkegowuk Territory, and train teachers for Cree immersion programs, and provide support for the Cree Language teachers; and

WHEREAS Omushkego Education already provides curricula for language and culture for the First Nation Schools, partners with Queen's University in a community based Indigenous Teacher Education Program, and assists Cree Language teachers in Language Gatherings; and

WHEREAS Omushkego Institute would meet the post-secondary needs of its community members by inclusion of culturally relevant curricula; and

WHEREAS the Omushkego Institute will explore other educational opportunities for the benefit of its members within Mushkegowuk Territory, including opportunities to enhance employment training opportunities, through partnerships with other educational institutes and service providers;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that this 36th Mamowihitowin of the Omushkegowuk re-affirms previous resolutions directing Omushkego Education to work towards the creation of a post-secondary Institution, referred to as the Omushkego Institute, including the paramount need to maintain the use of our language; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this 36th Mamowihitowin of the Omushkegowuk fully supports Omushkego Education in proceeding with the development of the Omushkego Institute for the benefit of community members within the Mushkegowuk First Nations including the development of necessary governance structures; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the proposed Omushkego Institute be developed without prejudice to the initiatives of Mushkegowuk First Nations and Educational Authorities and their efforts to secure funding; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that in planning the Omushkego Institute, consideration be given to developing a distributed educational system that recognizes and builds on the strengths, expertise and needs of the different Mushkegowuk First Nations by developing community hubs where programs could be delivered in-person and virtually.
